I was in a major reading slump that had lasted a few years, when I first picked up the audiobook of TE Kinsey’s first historical mystery starring Emily, Lady Hardcastle – A Quiet Life In The Country, and I was immediately hooked.
Lady Hardcastle is no ordinary Lady – in fact, she’s rather extraordinary. Educated, widowed, well travelled… and a former spy. Her friendship with her Lady’s Maid, Florence, defies normal social convention, and she doesn’t give a hoot. Florence herself is a surprise to many – short, sassy, smart, loyal, and a master of martial arts… Underestimate her at your peril. Together they make a formidable crime solving duo, and have survived a number of adventures in this fabulous cosy mystery series.

Murder on the Rocks sees Lady Hardcastle and Florence travelling to visit a wealthy American friend who has renovated an old fort on an island off the coast of Devon, and has gathered a group of friends and business associates for a preview of the work that’s been done. Before long, there are stolen jewels and murder with an unusual implement, and Lady Hardcastle and Flo are on the case.
Well plotted with twists and turns, vibrant characters, and the witty banter familiar to regular readers, this series shows no signs of slowing down – and remains on my must-read list.
Elizabeth Knowelden is one my favourite narrators, and even when I read the hard copy or ebook, her voice will always be that of Emily and Florence.
