REVIEW: Killer on the Kelvin Explorer by GB Ralph

REVIEW

Addison Harper is back on the 5th instalment of GB Ralph’s Milverton Mysteries, and regular followers on instagram will know just how much I adore this series. I have to say, the latest adventure is probably my favourite one yet!

For those new to the series, we first meet Addison Harper in Murder on Milverton Square. Living and working in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, Addison is summoned to the small town of Milverton to find he’s the sole beneficiary of his late great uncle’s estate. While waiting for the paperwork to be sorted, the solicitor in charge of the estate is found murdered. And so begins Addison’s new life in a small town, with larger than life characters, a tiny asian pensioner with a massive personality and coffee and cake to die for. Oh, and a hot cop…

On our 5th visit to the town, Addison is now working for the mayor in marketing Milverton to tourists, and takes a day trip out on the Kelvin Explorer – a vintage steam locomative that departs Milerton for a tour around the lower North Island. It’s not long before a body is discovered on board, and Addison is trapped on a steam train with a possible killer, a group of young school children, a drunk hen party, the deceased’s ex-wife and friends, an insufferable influencer and the singular and fabulous Mabel Zhao who is my all time favourite character. Despite not wanting to get involved, Addison and Mabel find they can’t help but ask questions… Chaos on rails!

With the investigation and action packed climax condensed into one day trip, this highly entertaining cosy is fast paced and impossible to put down. There are moments where I laughed so loud I scared my cat, FatBrian! Having never been to Aotearoa New Zealand, I loved the vivid scenery descriptions, and I felt like I was a passenger on the train with the characters.

If you want a warm, engaging and hilarious cosy mystery, book your ticket now to Milverton – it’s a series I go back to regularly, it’s like a comfort blanket. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Massive thanks to GB Ralph for the advance copy for review – my preorder is in anyway, and I’ll be ordering the audio as soon as it’s out next year! Meanwhile, the eBook is available on September 9th with paperback following shortly after.

Addison Harper and Sergeant Jake Murphy are off to a shaky start with their new living situation. So, when Addison has the chance to get out of town and clear his head, he’s quick to climb aboard.

The day’s scenic railway journey features a powerful steam engine pulling lovingly restored heritage carriages. On the train, passengers enjoy dramatic landscapes and endless cups of tea. When it comes to driving Milverton’s tourism, Addison can see they’re already on the right track. Unfortunately, a death en route threatens to derail not only the day’s excursion but any future marketing efforts.

Passengers have been promised an unforgettable day out – and they’re going to get it.

Killer on the Kelvin Explorer traverses New Zealand’s picturesque lower North Island and is the latest in a wonderful cosy mystery series. Investigate The Milverton Mysteries for a chaotic cast of local busybodies, delicious baked treats, a demanding and disdainful ginger cat, a very slow-burn romance with a rather appealing policeman, and of course… murder!
