8 – Whispers Under Ground – Ben Aaronovitch

Gollancz

I love revisiting the Rivers of London series, they withstand multiple re-reads. Whispers Underground sets up future storylines while showing Peter Grant’s development as an apprentice wizard. Whispers Underground probably not one of my favourites in the series, but enjoyable nonetheless.

9 – Death In The Hills – Kate Wells

Boldwood Books

Farm-set mystery based in the beautiful Malvern Hills.

10 – Murder on the Marlowe Belle – Robert Thorogood

HQ

Fourth book of the Marlow Murder Club Series, sees the Amateur Dramatic Society get a little more dramatic, with Judith & co investigating a death on board a river cruiser. Probably my favourite of the series.

11 – The Cream Tea Killer – Judy Leigh

Boldwood Books

The third in the Morwenna Mutton Mysteries, full of Cornish charm and quirky characters. It’s always a little jarring when real life issues such as drug dealing encroach into the cosy world of village mysteries, but Morwenna investigates in her own way. I do love the community feel of these books, and will be following the series

12 – The Kamogawa Food Detectives – Hisashi Kashiwai

Mantle

Vibes don’t get cosier than this. A father and daughter run an un-advertised diner, whilst also running a Food Detective Agency. Customers recount memories of meals they remember from their past, however vague the recollection, and father Nagare tracks down the ingredients and recreates the meal, reconnecting the customer with their past, bringing new memories to the fore. Each tale is told in two parts – the telling of the memories and the request, then the serving of the food and Nagare revealing how he made the food. A wonderful comfort read, reminding us what’s important in life.

13 – Murder in the Scottish Highlands – Dee MacDonald

Bookouture

The first in a new cosy series sees retired and widowed TV researcher Ally McKinley up sticks from Edinburgh to start a new life and venture in the Western Scottish Highlands to start a B & B business. When one of her first visitors is found dead outside the B&B with a knife in his back, Ally investigates, wanting to solve the crime before her business is damaged further.

A gentle cosy crime in a beautiful setting, with characters I can’t wait to get to know better.

14 – Poison at Penshaw Hall

A cosy series set in New Zealand, everything about these books is an absolute delight. This second books in the series sees awkward protagonist Addison Harper find himself still stuck in a small town where everyone knows everyone’s business, with a hot police sergeant. Going back to city life may be harder than Addison thought… Larger than life characters and a comically dramatic murder made this so much fun to read!
