The Waiting – Michael Connelly

Cover of The Waiting by Michael ConnellyI first picked up a Michael Connelly book at a train station in Glasgow, to read on my my trip home back to Manchester. It was City of Bones, published in 2002. I was hooked quickly and tore through it, and went back and read every book so far to get Harry Bosch’s back story. Back then, he was a loner with no family.

Michael Connelly is one of those writers that I automatically buy when the books are released, this one had me reflecting on how far we’ve come with this series.

It’s now 2024, and Bosch’s daughter has been in cop uniform for nearly 3 years, and is taking her own role in the series, as she joins the Open Unsolved Unit being run by Renee Ballard.

The Open Unsolved Unit is a team of volunteers led by Ballard that review old unsolved cases to see if modern techniques can help provide answers for families that have been waiting for justice, using technology that wasn’t available at the time of the crime.

Connelly excels at weaving multiple storylines through his novels, as one case gets a DNA hit that could have severe political implications for the squad, while Maddie Bosch joins the team bringing with her new information that could crack one of LA’s most notorious open cases, and Ballard has personal issues to deal with.

Renee is a strong resourceful character, picking up Harry Bosch’s mantle as the lone maverick. She understands the role her badge and office can play, but pushes the boundaries when needed to get results.

From the surf beaches to downtown LA to the burbs to Vegas – The Waiting is quite a ride, and the readers aren’t left waiting for the cases to unfurl.
