REVIEW: The Big Steal – Caimh McDonnell

Pauly and Brigit are back in the third adventure for MCM Investigations, a spin off series from Caimh McDonnell’s Dublin Trilogy – and probably my favourite of all the series (although that’s like picking a favourite child).

Following on from the events in Meanwhile in Dublin, the legend that is Phil Nellis is isolated from his group of friends, and is reported missing. Paul locates him, but the two former friends are coerced into repaying a debt left by Phil’s uncle, the gentleman thief Paddy Nellis. Strapped with explosives, the boys have 52 hours to steal the Book of Kells from Dublin’s Trinity College.

MCM Investigations is a brilliant comedy crime series, one that I always return to as a comfort read, and the new instalment sees the team staging a heist, in the way only they can. Causing chaos across Dublin, a visit to the Zoo, and a final heist scene that Tom Cruise could only have nightmares about… It’s not your usual Mission Impossible scene, and you can expect the usual chaos that comes as MCM Standard.

Phil Nellis is probably one of my favourite characters ever written, and it’s fantastic so see more of him (although probably a bit more than was necessary!). As someone diagnosed autistic, Nellisian Logic just makes so much sense to me! Neurodiversity is inadvertently very well represented in the MCM novels, with different characters showing different traits, all of them ringing so true to life, and often not forced or commented on – it’s just how people are, and they’re loved and accepted mostly by their peers, who just seem to naturally accommodate for it without drama.

I love the friendships and found family in this series, and revisit them often, so it’s lovely to have a fantastic addition to the line up!
