REVIEW: Death on the Dee – MC Mackay

The ladies of the Ballochbrae Book Club are back for a second outing in this cosy mystery set in Royal Deeside, Scotland.

Flora, Morag, Heather and Chatty are four very different personalities, united by finding out that life doesn’t always go the way they’ve planned.

When new hotel owners Rupert and Ollie appear in town to take over the local hotel, the ladies are less concerned about sexual orientation than they are about the men’s lack of socks.

Offensive graffiti appears and threats are made against the hotel, so the ladies’ book club is once again distracted from attempts at reading literature and focussed on real life investigations.

I love the relationships between the women. Despite their vast differences, they have an understanding of each other, and you feel they’re stronger as a unit.

It’s a while before the first body turns up in this gentle cosy mystery, but it’s still an engaging story. The titular death doesn’t just refer to the human loss, but also the potential death of Ballochbrae itself should the new hotel venture fail. This makes the ladies work harder to solve the mysterious goings on that are putting the hotel in jeopardy.

I’ve enjoyed discovering this cosy series, and looking forward to revisiting Ballochbrae in the future.

Many thanks to the author and LoveBooksTours for the opportunity to review this novel.
